Burj Khalifa is 828 metres tall, the tallest building in the world. Book a timed observation-deck ticket online, choose the sunset slot if you want the light and expect to pay more for it, and watch the free Dubai Fountain shows from the waterfront in the evening.
Choosing a deck and a slot
The observation decks sit in the upper levels, with a higher deck for a premium ticket. The standard decks give the full view of the city and the coast; the higher deck adds altitude and a quieter space. Tickets are timed and the price depends on the slot: the sunset window is the most expensive and the most popular, and off-peak mornings are cheapest. Book online in advance; buying at the door usually costs more and can sell out.
Pick a clear day. Haze, which is common in summer and after sandstorms, can flatten the view; the cool months give the sharpest visibility.
The fountain
The Dubai Fountain is the choreographed fountain system on the lake in front of the tower, set to music and light. Evening shows run roughly every half hour and are free to watch from the waterfront promenade, with a few earlier afternoon shows. The best views are from the lake edge on the Dubai Mall side or from a restaurant terrace, which needs a booking.
Doing both well
A good order is: arrive for a late-afternoon slot, descend after dark, then stand at the lake for a fountain show and eat. Weekends and public holidays are busy; the week after the New Year rush is quieter. Dress comfortably, as the mall is cool and the walk to the lake is outdoors.
