Al Qudra is a set of man-made lakes in the Dubai desert that attract flamingos, ducks and other waterfowl, with a long cycling track and, away from the lights, some of the better stargazing within reach of the city. Go in the cooler months, early in the morning or at dusk.
Lakes, birds and cyclists
Al Qudra is a surprise: freshwater lakes in a desert, with flamingos, ducks and other waterbirds, which in winter number in the hundreds. A dedicated cycle track of many kilometres loops through the area, and on winter weekends it is busy with riders. The famous Love Lakes, two heart-shaped lakes, are a popular photograph stop.
Dark sky
Away from the lakes, the desert around Al Qudra is darker than anywhere in Dubai city. Local astronomy groups have run stargazing nights here; check that any event is licensed. For real dark skies, our stargazing guide explains why the desert near Abu Dhabi, beyond Al Wathba, is better still.
Good to know
Go early in the morning or at dusk from November to March. Weekends are crowded and parking fills; weekdays are calm. Bring water and a layer, since desert nights are cool, and respect the birds: keep your distance and do not feed them. Overnight camping needs the right permission; see our guide to camping rules.
Before you cycle or camp
The cycle track is long, flat and exposed. Carry more water than you expect, wear a helmet and avoid the middle of the day: there is almost no shade and temperatures climb quickly outside winter. Weekend mornings are busy with group rides, so ride on the right and keep your speed in check around walkers and families at the lakes.
If you plan to stay for the evening, be aware that camping rules differ by emirate and by site, and Dubai's rules distinguish between a short weekend trip and long-term camping. Our camping rules guide explains what has been reported, and the safest route is a managed site or a licensed organiser.
