Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi, a coral-and-sea-stone watchtower and palace from which the city grew. Allow around two hours for the guided tour and the House of Artisans, and time a visit for the Al Hosn Festival, 15 to 30 January 2027.
Why it is worth an hour of your time
Abu Dhabi is a young skyline with a short visible history, and Qasr Al Hosn is where you can see that history physically. The watchtower dates from the 18th century and the palace around it was extended over the following 200 years as the seat of the ruling family, before the towers of the modern city went up around it.
It is open as a cultural site rather than a conventional museum: guided tours take you through the watchtower and the inner palace, and the House of Artisans has craft demonstrations such as weaving and pottery. The point is to see how a settlement worked, not to read plaques.
The festival and the best time to go
The Al Hosn Festival returns on 15 to 30 January 2027 with Emirati crafts, community events and local food around the site. It is one of the easiest ways to meet the heritage side of the city without leaving the centre. The rest of the year, go in the cooler months and late afternoon, when the white walls are in warm light.
Pair it with
The site sits near the Cultural Foundation and the Corniche, so a heritage morning and a walk along the water fits in half a day. For a long evening afterwards, the desert is about 50 minutes from the city.
