Abu Dhabi's mangroves are the easiest wilderness within the city limits. Guided kayak tours run through the Eastern Mangroves and Jubail area in the cooler months, typically for one and a half to two hours, with herons, crabs and, in winter, flamingos. Tide timing decides how far you paddle.

Why it surprises people

Visitors expect Abu Dhabi to be sand and glass. The mangroves, tidal forests of grey mangrove that line the creeks around the island, are a different city: flat, silent water, roots like fingers and birdlife you can approach by paddle. Most tours leave from the Eastern Mangroves or from Jubail and are guided, which means no navigation and some commentary on the ecosystem.

Going well

Tides decide the route, and the operator will tell you the best slot for your date: a low tide can shorten the paddle. Go between November and March, when the water is comfortable and the birds are most active; mornings are calmer. Wear a hat, sunscreen and clothes that can get wet, and bring water and a dry bag for your phone.

If you do not want to paddle, the elevated boardwalk at Jubail Mangrove Park gives a walking route through the same landscape, and some operators offer paddle-boarding as well.

What you are looking at

Look for grey herons and egrets at the edges, crabs on the mud, small fish in the shallows and, in winter, flamingos in the wider channels. Do not trail your paddle through the roots, do not approach nesting birds and take everything you bring back with you. The mangroves are protected.
