Mleiha, in the interior of Sharjah, holds one of the UAE's richest archaeological landscapes: Bronze Age tombs, an archaeological centre and Fossil Rock, plus desert activities and camps. Go in the cool months and allow half a day to a day.
What is there
Mleiha is a desert landscape with a very long human story. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre interprets finds from the area, which include Bronze Age tombs and evidence of settlement across thousands of years; nearby Jebel Faya is associated with some of the earliest evidence of modern human migration out of Africa. Fossil Rock, a limestone outcrop, is a popular short hike.
Desert as well as history
The area also offers desert activities, including stargazing, dune and off-road experiences and overnight stays in camps. It sits inside a conservation area, which keeps the landscape quieter than the better-known safari routes. Check what is currently offered and book ahead for evening and overnight programmes.
Planning
Mleiha is roughly 50 minutes from Dubai and about the same from Sharjah city, so it is easy as a day trip. Go from November to March and wear sun protection and sturdy shoes for the hike. It combines well with the Heart of Sharjah in a two-day trip.
What to bring, and how it differs from a safari
Mleiha is a place to walk and look, not a convoy. Bring sturdy shoes for the sandy ground and the Fossil Rock hike, a hat, sunscreen and more water than you think you need, since there is little shade between the sites. Phone signal can be patchy in the interior, so download your map before you leave and tell someone your plan if you are hiking.
If you want an evening here, ask the operator what is licensed and booked in advance: stargazing programmes and overnight camps are run by organised providers on set dates, and turning up without a booking usually means nothing is available. Our advice is to arrive in the morning for the archaeology and decide on the evening once you have seen the landscape.
